Comet Lemmon streaks through the solar system in this October 4 images. The comet will be in the western evening sky the latter third of October. It will be a good target for binoculars, and could become bright enough to see with the eye alone. It will appear to the upper right of the bright star Arcturus, which is north of due west, on the 21st, then move to the upper left, crossing Serpens and into Ophiuchus. It will pass closest to Earth on the 21st, at a hefty distance of about 55 million miles. At the same time, Comet Swan will be in the southwest. It, too, could become bright enough to see with the unaided eye. It will stand to the upper left of teapot-shaped Sagittarius on the evening of the 21st, cruise above Capricornus, and be near the top of Aquarius by month’s end. Both comets are swinging fairly close to the Sun this month. Check here for updates.
