The Sun’s dynamic outer atmosphere, the corona, looks a bit like an angry jack-o-lantern in this recent ultraviolet image from Solar Orbiter, a European Sun-watching spacecraft. The wide, dark “mouth” at the bottom, as well as the “nose” above it, are regions of cooler gas. The bright “eyes” are associated with sunspots and other active regions that are producing outbursts of energy and charged particles. The streamers around the Sun are part of the solar wind, which is a high-speed flow of charged particles from the corona into the solar system. This image was compiled from 200 individual images snapped on March 9, 2025. [ESA/NASA/Solar Orbiter/EUI Team/E. Kraaikamp (ROB)]
