The Milky Way and the southern lights glisten above the South Pole Telescope, which takes advantage of the cold, thin air to view the universe at wavelengths that are difficult to observe elsewhere on Earth. The south pole, which is nearing the start of winter, is an excellent site for astronomy, and hosts several instruments. [National Science Foundation]
