The Royal Greenwich Observatory overlooks the Thames Valley in this painting from ca. 1696. The observatory was established by decree of King Charles II on June 22, 1675. It was a working observatory for three centuries, and marked the starting point for both Earth lines of longitude and the universal timekeeping system. [Royal Museums Greenwich]
