A dying star is blowing giant “bubbles” of gas and dust into space, sculpting the beautiful scene depicted in this Webb Space Telescope image of NGC 1514. Two stars inhabit the center of the nebula, one of which is transitioning to become a white dwarf–a stellar corpse. As it expires, the star is shedding its outer layers of gas. They are accelerated by radiation and winds from the dying star. The process began about 4,000 years ago and will continue for thousands of years longer. This image was shot in infrared light, with different colors assigned to different wavelengths. [NASA/ESA/CSA/STScI/Michael Ressler (NASA-JPL)/Dave Jones (IAC)]
