Volcanoes Everywhere

view of io from juno spacecraft, october 2023

Juno, a Jupiter-orbiting spacecraft, snapped this view of Jupiter's volcanic moon Io on October 15, 2023, providing the best view of its surface in two decades. Juno made its closest pass to the moon yet, at a distance of 7,232 miles (11,645 km). Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system, with more than 400 volcanic features. Juno is scheduled to pass as close as 900 miles (1,500 km), providing some of the sharpest views of Io ever. The image has been edited to enhance the contrast and colors.
