Comet C/2025 K1 (ATLAS) has split into three large chunks in this recent image from the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii. The comet came from the Oort Cloud, a distant “shell” of comet-like bodies that surrounds the solar system. It passed closest to the Sun in October 2025, but began falling apart soon afterward. Each chunk produces its own surrounding cloud of gas and dust, some of which is blown away by solar winds and radiation, forming multiple tails. [International Gemini Observatory/NOIRLab/NSF/AURA/B.
