Annular Solar Eclipse, 1994

The Sun encircles the intervening Moon with a bright ring of fire in this image, which was taken during an annular solar eclipse. Such an eclipse will be visible across parts of the United States on the morning of October 14. During an annular eclipse, the Moon is a little farther from Earth than average, so it's not quite large enough to completely cover the Sun's disk. [Rick Fienberg/Sky & Telescope]
