Among the many treasures discovered in the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhem were to wieht a celestial origin. The pectoral (at left) features a bright yellow scarab beetle, which was made from a tektite, which is a piece of glass that formed when a large space rock hit or exploded above the Sahara Desert, melting some of its sand. The knife was made from iron. At the time, the only sources of iron in Egypt were meteorites, and the metal in the knife blade seems to match that of a class of meteorites.
