The Lucy spacecraft snapped this series of images of the asteroid Donaldjohanson as it closed to just 600 miles (1,000 km) from the asteroid on April 20, 2025. The asteroid is roughly five miles (8 km) long and two miles (3.5 km) wide. Donaldjohanson orbits the Sun in the asteroid belt, a wide ring of debris between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. This encounter was a dress rehearsal for Lucy’s primary mission, which is to study several Trojan asteroids, which share Jupiter’s orbit. The first encounter will take place in 2027.
