Rocket pioneer Robert Goddard stands beside the world’s first liquid-fueled rocket, which took flight on March 16, 1926, from his Aunt Effie’s farm in Auburn, Massachusetts. The rocket is held in a triangular frame. The engine is at the top of the rocket, with the propellant tanks below it, attached by feed lines. Goddard spent decades experimenting with rockets, and received 200 patents in various fields. Because he seldom published his results, and didn’t collaborate with other scientists, however, many historians say his contributions to the development of modern rockets were limited. [Esther C.
