hale telescope dome at night

The 200-inch Hale Telescope peers out from its massive dome, with the Pleiades star cluster and the bright star Aldebaran in the background. The telescope, at Palomar Observatory in southern California, was dedicated 75 years ago, and was the largest in the world for almost three decades. It's still an astronomical workhorse, gazing at the cosmos every clear night of the year. [Damond Benningfield]
