Comet Cloud-y Skies

In the middle of the last century, astronomer Jan Oort came up with the idea that a voluminous cloud of comets surrounds our solar system. With lots of evidence to support it, the comet cloud idea captured astronomers’ imaginations. Yet the cloud is so distant and dim that they are still struggling to understand its origins and properties — and to see it! — today.
