Layin' Tracks
Layin' Tracks
Tracks in the Martian soil show the path the Spirit rover has covered since arriving at Mars two months ago. It has driven almost 500 feet, and is a few hundred feet short of a crater named Bonneville, which it should reach in a few days. The flat area near the center of this image is Laguna Hollow, where Spirit spent three days studying the soil. The rover used one of its wheels to dig a small trench to let scientists view rocks and soil below the surface. Other landmarks in the image include Grissom Hill (the small hill on the horizon), and Spirit's landing platform, a narrow feature to the right of Grissom Hill. [Credit: NASA/JPL/OSU/Cornell]
