High-Flying Astronomy
Imagine you could pull a curtain back from the cosmos and discover hidden treasures. The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, or SOFIA, consists of a large telescope housed in a Boeing 747. It will seek those hidden treasures on every flight as it soars above the clouds and water vapor in the lower atmosphere that block our view of much of the infrared universe. It has been a long and difficult road for SOFIA, but its 100-inch (2.5-meter) telescope finally opened its penetrating eye in late May.
