A new space telescope compiled this map of the gamma-ray sky, which was released August 26. Gamma rays are produced by some of the most powerful objects and events in the universe, including disks of superhot gas around black holes (such as the "blazar" at lower left), exploding stars, and the remnants of exploding stars, such as the pulsar. The telescope, launched earlier this year, was renamed in honor of physicist Enrico Fermi. [NASA/DOE/LAT Team]
