An artist's concept shows a giant flare on the star HD 189733 eroding the atmosphere of an orbiting planet. Hubble Space Telescope detected the escaping atmosphere, while the Swift satellite detected a powerful outburst of X-rays from the star. Scientists concluded that the flare was blasting away the outer layers of the planet's atmosphere. [NASA/GSFC]
