Free Agent

An artist's concept shows a planet floating freely through the Milky Way galaxy, stripped from its parent star. A recent study discovered 10 such worlds toward the center of the galaxy, suggesting that free-floating planets may be more numerous than stars. Such worlds are born around stars, just as Earth was, but are ejected by gravitational interactions with other planets. [NASA/JPL]
