Martian Litter
The heatshield that protected Mars Science Laboratory during its descent through the Martian atmosphere falls away in this image from one of the Curiosity rover's cameras. The craft was still high above the surface when the heatshield separated. The heatshield, parachute, the rockets that lowered the rover to the surface, and ballast that was dropped at a high altitude all fell into the same crater as the rover. [NASA/JPL]
