Mars Targets
The Curiosity rover is exploring rocks in what appears to be an ancient streambed inside Gale Crater on Mars (top). The surface is strewn with small, rounded pebbles that must have been polished and deposited by running water. The other working Mars rover, Opportunity, is studying an odd ridge of rocks inside Endeavour Crater (bottom). The rocks are in an area that appears to contain minerals that formed in a watery environment. While Curiosity is just beginning its Martian journey, Opportunity has been roving around Mars since January 2004, and has logged a total of 21.8 miles (35 km).[ NASA/JPL (2)]
