Leading the Way

Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong relaxes in the wee hours of July 21, 1969, after completing the first moonwalk. Armstrong led humanity's first expedition to land on another world, piloting the lunar module, Eagle, to a successful landing in the Sea of Tranquility, then becoming the first person to set foot on the Moon. He was followed a few minutes later by lunar module pilot Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin. Armstrong, Aldrin, and command module pilot Michael Collins returned to Earth on July 24.
