M104 is also known as the Sombrero Galaxy because of a dark lane of dust that looks like the brim of a hat. Recent research suggests the Sombrero is a cross between a spiral galaxy and an elliptical galaxy, with a broad disk of stars surrounding a fat bulge of stars in the middle.
