In Memory of Lynn Brill

Lynn Lyles Brill served as a member of the McDonald Observatory and Department of Astronomy Board of Visitors from 2004 until her death in October 2009, following a courageous struggle with cancer. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, and friend, who leaves behind a world of lives she touched with her unfailing love, support, and comfort.

Lynn was born in Austin, the daughter of Mary Nobles Lyles and Julian Knox Lyles. She attended Pease School, University Junior High School, Austin High School and the University of Texas at Austin.

As a generous member of the Board of Visitors, she helped with the BoV’s mission in numerous ways, including opening her home to host fund-raising events for the observatory’s Education and Outreach program. Lynn attributed her interest in Astronomy to her seventh-grade science teacher at University Junior High School.

Lynn’s instructions provided that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to McDonald Observatory. We received more than $12000 in Lynn’s memory. These gifts were used to upgrade the StarDate website, which provides daily astronomy information to millions of site visitors each month. We are grateful to all the donors, and we are honored that Lynn and her husband and daughters chose this way to acknowledge her support of her community and her love of astronomy.

We will miss Lynn, her support of McDonald Observatory and the University of Texas at Austin, and the warmth of her friendship.
