StarDate Online is 10 Years Old
On
May 8, 1996, the McDonald Observatory public information office launched StarDate
Online — the web companion to its popular public radio program about astronomy
and space exploration. On the occasion of our 10th anniversary, we're taking
a look back at how the site has changed over the years.

The
First Home Page
The site began with a simple home page and links to just about everything we
had available -- transcripts of the daily
radio program, our Solar System Guide,
and special information about Comet Hale-Bopp! |
1999 » New Features, New Design
We expanded the site significantly in the late '90s, adding search
functions,
a gift shop, FAQs, and some content
translated into Spanish. |

New Logo, Total Redesign
The site's trademark starry background appeared with the turn of the century,
as did a slew of new features: the image of the
week, daily moon phase, and
sunrise/sunset calculator. Behind the scenes, we moved the site to an industrial-strength
web server to accomodate our ever-growing traffic. |
